What decides the price

Used, reconditioned or new

Used

A head taken off another engine with the same code. Ask how far that engine had driven and whether the head was checked for cracks and flatness.

Reconditioned

A head that has been through an engineering shop. These are often sold on exchange for your old head, so ask what work was done.

New

A brand-new head, sold either bare or complete. Compare like with like: a bare head needs your old valves, springs and camshafts moved across.

Bare or complete: what comes with the head

Two heads for the same engine can be priced far apart because one comes with more parts. In the adverts behind this price guide, the Navara YD25 head was sold bare, the Hardbody TD27 head came with valves and springs, one NP200 1.5 dCi head came with its camshafts but no tappet cover, and the 1400 head came with both manifolds, the carburettor and the tappet cover.

So when you ask for a price, say whether you want a bare head or a complete one, and send the engine code. If you are not sure of the code, send a photo of the engine plate with your request.
